Reward Yourself for Achieving Fitness Goals

Posted by Leave a Comment

I wanted to share with you today a guest post by Renee Polychronis and the title is “Reward Yourself for Achieving Fitness Goals.” I could not agree more and I hope you enjoy!

Whether you are trying to lose weight, tone up, or improve your cardiovascular fitness, it can be hard to stay on track until you start to see some measurable progress.  In the case of weight loss, if you have a lot to lose, it may seem overwhelming.  Any long-term goal, especially for weight loss, is best tackled in smaller, easier to accomplish, mini-goals.  It sounds much more achievable to say, “I need to lose five pounds, four times” instead of “I need to lose 20 pounds”!

Once you’ve determined your ultimate goal and broken it down into more manageable mini-goals, the trick is to motivate yourself to keep going after you accomplish each one.  I’m a big believer in rewarding myself for accomplishing goals, but if you’re like most people, when you think of rewarding yourself, you think of big-ticket items, or even worse……food!  The goal here is to lose weight, not go into debt, or even worse, over-indulge and gain back the weight you worked hard to lose!  Once you are at your ultimate goal weight, you can go on a huge shopping spree and buy your dream skinny outfit, but for now, slow and steady wins the race.

So how can you reward yourself without melting your credit card?  When many of us think of economically priced rewards, things like ice cream, Sprinkles cupcakes, or a Starbuck’s Venti whatever with whipped cream come to mind.  All obtainable for under $5, right?  Right, but not right for the girl who has worked so hard to lose those first five pounds!  Make a list of small rewards, and think luxury, not feeding frenzy.  Maybe you need some help.  Here are some of my ideas for rewarding weight loss while stashing extra cash for that fabulous wardrobe you’ll shop for when you achieve your goal weight!

Book a massage.  This reward is dual purpose for the workout girl.  It makes you feel great, and it helps relieve muscle soreness.  There are many ways to get a great deal on a massage.  Massage Envy offers one hour massages for as low as $49 when you become a member of their program.  Most major cities have spas with monthly programs, such as Hiatus Spa+Retreat in Dallas where you pay $59 per month and receive your choice of a facial or massage.  Still not in your budget?  Did you know most Whole Foods stores have a licensed massage therapist in the store all day, doing chair massages for $1 per minute?  Just drop in or call ahead for an appointment.

Book a manicure.  Once again, prices run the gamut.  You can schedule an ultra-luxurious mani/pedi at your favorite day spa, or in most major cities you can get a great manicure for as little as $12.  If you think being five pounds lighter looks good, wait until you see yourself five pounds lighter with great looking nails!

Make a date with a friend.  I can’t think of anything more luxurious than having free time to visit with a friend I haven’t seen in a while.  If you still have Starbuck’s on your mind, meet there, grab a cozy couch in the corner, get some of their delicious green tea, hot or iced, and catch up on the latest.  Your friend is sure to rave about your recent weight loss, and leave you feeling on top of the world!

Make a movie date….with yourself.  This is serious decadence, especially for those of you with little ones at home.  Just when you think you can’t stand one more episode of Thomas the Tank Engine, ask a friend or relative to babysit, and go see the latest chick flick, documentary or foreign film…..anything that doesn’t involve animation or Justin Bieber.  Pack your own movie snack so you won’t be tempted at the snack bar.  My two favorite snacks to take to movies are almonds, or apple wedges with either a packet of Justin’s All Natural Almond Butter, or a Jif To Go individual tiny tub of smooth peanut butter.  Relax, get lost in the movie and enjoy your treat!

I hope you will try some of my suggestions, or think of some of your own.  Think about what you enjoy and what makes you feel special.  Rewarding your weight loss achievement will make you excited about setting the next goal, and by sticking to a budget, you’ll have tons of cash to spend on that dream outfit once you’ve reached your long term goal!
